Lagos Comes Alive As “Detty December” Draws Global Crowd

Date:

As the Harmattan winds usher in West Africa’s dry season, Lagos enters its most festive period of the year, known locally as “Detty December,” when Nigerians at home and abroad return for holidays, concerts and nightlife.

Africa’s largest city, home to about 20 million people on a typical day, swells further each December as visitors flood in from across Nigeria and the diaspora. The season has become a major cultural and economic moment, blending music, fashion and late-night revelry.

At Ilubirin, a reclaimed waterfront development, crowds gathered for the Detty December Festival, a multi-week run of concerts and performances. Technicians set up lighting among unfinished buildings as revellers arrived for an evening that was only just beginning. “After working all year, this is the time to let loose,” said Chioma Chinweze, a 33-year-old marketing consultant.

The celebrations stretch across the city. On Victoria Island, one of Lagos’s most affluent districts, clubs and lounges reported booming business. “This month, everyone goes crazy,” said Charbel Abi Habib, a lounge manager. “To be honest, this is when the money is made.”

While Nigeria is grappling with high inflation and a cost-of-living crisis, many partygoers say December offers a temporary escape. “Living here is tough, but December is when you’re carefree,” said Michelle Wobo, a make-up artist.

New venues have also opened to meet demand, with crowds moving from one hotspot to another deep into the night. At some clubs, Afrobeats stars made surprise appearances, drawing packed dance floors and adding to the sense of spectacle.

Despite broader national concerns, including insecurity in parts of the country, the atmosphere in Lagos’s nightlife districts remained upbeat. “I feel very safe here,” said Liberty Mini, an interior decorator who has lived in the city for three years.

As dawn approaches, many revellers head home briefly, already planning the next outing. “Party continues tomorrow,” said Babatunde Olabode, a real estate agent, summing up a season when Lagos shows no sign of slowing down.
