Lawal: APC Will Lose Northern Support in 2027

Date:

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has said that elected officials in Northern Nigeria will not be re-elected in 2027 unless they defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a rising opposition coalition.

Lawal, speaking on Trust TV, criticized the APC for what he described as the marginalisation and neglect of the North. He said the party had failed to deliver on its promises, leaving many Northern politicians with little choice but to leave the ruling party if they wish to remain politically relevant.

“Which northern elected official will go to campaign on the platform of the APC this coming election? Nobody—unless ab initio, you have no plan to win,” Lawal said. “Unless they join the ADC, they will not win… simply because they belong to a destructive party.”

The former SGF stated that discussions were already underway with some northern governors about joining the ADC in preparation for the 2027 general election. He stressed that the current government has abandoned infrastructure development in the region.

“There’s no visible infrastructure work going on in the North. No federal projects. Maybe in their imagination, but we don’t see it,” he said.

Lawal also backed recent comments made by former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of neglecting the North while prioritizing infrastructure in the South. He argued that both he and Kwankwaso, with their engineering backgrounds, are particularly observant of such developments—or lack thereof.

DAILY POST recalls that Kwankwaso recently condemned the federal government for allocating more resources to the South and overlooking developmental needs in Northern Nigeria.
