Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has significantly expanded the workforce of public secondary schools in the state, increasing staff numbers from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 as of 2025.
The Chairperson of the Post Primary Schools Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, disclosed this on Wednesday during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governorβs Office in Ibadan. Her remarks were supported by a statement from the governorβs Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
Oladipo revealed that the government recruited 10,500 teaching and non-teaching personnel in the second term alone, underscoring the administrationβs commitment to improving educational outcomes across the state.
βFor better school administration, Governor Makinde created four additional educational zones, bringing the total to ten,β she said. The zones now include Ibadan Zones I to IV, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Kishi, Saki, Eruwa, and Iseyin.
The commission also established a Directorate of Pension and Post Services for improved service delivery to TESCOM retirees, and appointed 10 Tutors-General/Permanent Secretaries alongside a Headquarters Permanent Secretary to strengthen oversight of schools and staff.
According to Oladipo, the commission conducted promotions from 2017 to 2024 and continued disbursing running grants to 695 public secondary schools. Additionally, she highlighted that the recent recruitment drive in 2024 and early 2025 brought in 7,500 teaching and 3,000 non-teaching staff, aimed at enhancing student performance in both internal and external examinations.
βThe employment drive not only boosts academic standards but also contributes to economic development by improving the living conditions of the newly hired staff,β she added.
TESCOM has also introduced e-payment for car loans to ease the burden on staff who previously had to travel to Ibadan for cheque collection. Plans are underway to train 695 school principals on 21st-century school management techniques.
