Military Completes Probe Of Officers Over Alleged Coup Plot

Date:

The Defence Headquarters has concluded its investigation into 16 military officers arrested in October 2025 over alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, including claims of plotting to overthrow the Federal Government.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the investigation report has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in line with established military procedures.

According to the statement, the probe found that some of the officers engaged in conduct inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The investigation also identified officers allegedly involved in actions aimed at undermining constitutional authority, an offence the military described as a serious violation of service codes.

“The comprehensive investigation process examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel,” the statement said, adding that the findings confirmed allegations of behaviour incompatible with military professionalism.

Defence Headquarters said officers found to have a case to answer will be arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels for trial under the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service laws.
