Muslims in Sokoto state, northern Nigeria, are preparing for Ramadan while trying to move past the December 25 US air strikes that targeted Islamist militants in the region. The strikes hit two alleged Islamic State (ISIS) enclaves in Tangaza district, just 75 kilometres from the state capital, raising local concerns but also hopes for renewed peace.
The cityβs Abu Hurairah central mosque was filled with worshippers despite sweltering heat, as imams emphasized charity, brotherhood, and unity ahead of the holy month. Many residents expressed shock at the strikes but remain cautiously optimistic that Ramadan could signal a period of calm.
Local leaders highlight the significance of Ramadan in fostering peace. Umaru Riskuwa, custodian of the mosque, said the holy month gives insurgents a chance to βmake people feel peace in their hearts,β while ordinary residents prayed for the end of violence in the region.
Sokotoβs streets and markets remained bustling, showing daily life continuing despite recent tensions. Religious workshops and government support efforts, including food and cash aid distributed to families affected by banditry, aim to prepare the community for a peaceful Ramadan.
Poverty and past insecurity continue to challenge the region, with more than 90% living below the poverty line. Nevertheless, residents and officials alike are focused on maintaining calm, emphasizing faith, unity, and cautious optimism as the Muslim holy month begins.
