The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has congratulated the university community as Muslims and Christians begin this year’s observance of Ramadan and Lent, respectively.
In a statement released by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, Prof. Egbewole described the religious seasons, marked by worship, sacrifice, and piety, as opportunities for adherents to renew their faith and strengthen relationships with others.
He noted that the “simultaneous commencement” of Ramadan and Lent is not coincidental but reflects the unity and oneness of humanity.
Prof. Egbewole urged members of the university community to conduct themselves in accordance with the guidance provided in their respective holy books.
He emphasized that the seasons extend beyond fasting, abstinence from food and drink, and sexual restraint, explaining that they are intended to foster discipline, piety, and a spirit of sacrifice.
The Vice Chancellor encouraged the community to use the period to deepen their faith and promote good neighbourliness, noting that sincere observance leads to spiritual elevation.
As Vice President (West Africa) of the Association of African Universities (AAU) and Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), Prof. Egbewole commended the longstanding fraternity and harmony between Muslim and Christian members at UNILORIN.
He described the university as a model of religious tolerance and pledged that the administration would continue to preserve this legacy.
Prof. Egbewole also called on the university community to pray for Nigeria’s peace and stability, as well as for the continued progress of UNILORIN.
He concluded by wishing all staff and students a peaceful, meaningful, and rewarding Ramadan and Lent season.
