The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strengthened civil-military relations in Akwa Ibom State by inaugurating a new classroom and staff block at Edemaya Unity College in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area. The project, part of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Special Intervention initiative, includes three classrooms, a principalâs office, and staff rooms, and honors retired Air Vice Marshal Iboro Harry Etukudo, a native of the state.
Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, inaugurating the project on behalf of the CAS, emphasized that it is part of NAFâs nationwide effort to foster trust and goodwill between the military and local communities. He noted that 10 similar projects have been executed across Nigeria, supporting socio-economic development while maintaining ties with retired senior officers.
The CAS urged beneficiaries to maintain the new facilities responsibly and encouraged youths to consider careers in the NAF. He also appealed to communities to support security efforts by providing credible information to authorities.
AVM Etukudo (rtd), the project facilitator, expressed gratitude to NAF for honoring him and highlighted that the new block marks the beginning of broader development at the collegeâs permanent site. He called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to expand the institution, which serves students who could not gain admission into government secondary schools.
Representing Governor Umo Eno, Commissioner for Education Professor Ubong Essien Umoh praised NAF for its commitment to grassroots development, noting alignment with the stateâs educational agenda. The ceremony also featured the conferment of the traditional title âUFAN EDEMAYAâ on the CAS, meaning âFriend of the People of Edemaya,â and the presentation of a staff of honour, symbolizing partnership and community appreciation.
