NBC Urges Responsible Broadcasting Ahead Of 2027 Polls

Date:

The Ilorin State Office of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has urged broadcast stations to uphold responsible and professional use of the airwaves as Nigeria enters the electioneering period ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a goodwill message to broadcast organisations, the NBC commended station managers and their teams for their cooperation and professionalism throughout 2025, noting that the current state office leadership assumed duty in August. The commission appealed for the continued strengthening of the cordial relationship in the year ahead.

With 2026 marking the start of political activities toward the 2027 polls, the NBC cautioned broadcasters against airing content capable of undermining peace, national unity, or public order. It warned that incitement, hate speech, unverified allegations and disinformation must be avoided, stressing that “there must first be a country before an election.”

The commission also reminded stations of their obligation to promote pluralism by granting equitable airtime to all political parties during campaign periods, with appropriate consideration for duration and time belts. Political advertisements and jingles, it added, must be presented in decent and appropriate language.

Beyond political content, the NBC reiterated strict compliance with provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code on religious and medical programming. It prohibited the promotion of products or substances claiming to cure serious medical conditions by traditional medicine practitioners, as well as the use of items such as “anointing oil” or “miracle water” for medical purposes.

Broadcasters were further warned against airing music or other content containing vulgar, indecent or socially unacceptable lyrics.

The commission said it is actively monitoring broadcasts for compliance with the code and cautioned that violations will attract sanctions.
