Rabiu Kwankwaso has endorsed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as consistent with the party’s power-sharing agreement and commitment to fairness.
Kwankwaso spoke on Saturday at the party’s national convention in Abuja, where he addressed delegates, supporters and stakeholders.
“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to Southern so that the region can complete its eight years,” he said.
“This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”
He also called on Nigerians and party supporters to participate in the party’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Please register now,” he appealed.
The endorsement came shortly after the NDC adopted a resolution officially zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The motion was moved during the convention by Afam Victor Ogene and later adopted by party delegates.
Announcing the decision, the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement was part of a broader strategy to balance regional interests within the opposition coalition.
According to Cleopas, the presidential ticket would return to the North in 2031 after the completion of the South’s tenure.
The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of the National Working Committee during the convention.
The zoning arrangement is expected to strengthen the chances of former Peter Obi and other southern aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primary.
The development comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, as opposition figures intensify efforts to form a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Meanwhile, Obi and Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC in Abuja and urged party members to avoid internal divisions and focus on national development.
Speaking at the event, Obi said their decision to join the party was driven by the need for a stable political platform free from internal crises.
