Nigeria Cup to Blend Golf, Grassroots Development in 28th Edition

Date:

Organisers of the 28th Nigeria Cup say this year’s tournament will combine competitive golf with grassroots development and community projects. The annual event, hosted by the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938, will run from September 20 to 27.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, tournament organising committee chairman Wale Onaolapo described the Nigeria Cup as one of the most anticipated fixtures on the club’s calendar.

He said the 2025 edition will begin with a children’s competition and conclude with the grand finale and gala night, adding that “top-notch golfers within the club” will compete for glory on the challenging Ikoyi Club 1938 course.

This year’s programme includes a “Golf for Good” competition, a caddies’ tournament, ladies’ day, sponsors’ and veterans’ events, and a professional contest before the final weekend.

Beyond competition, the organisers highlighted the tournament’s role in nurturing young talent. Chairman of the Ikoyi Club Community Nigeria Association, Rotimi Obajimi, said the kids’ competition was designed to give children opportunities to develop in the sport.

“The ladies’ section of the club plays a leading role in nurturing future players,” Obajimi added.

The committee also stressed the importance of golf caddies, noting their central role in the game. Member Segun Dada said, “They are very much an important part of the Nigeria Cup and golfing in general… If you have a great caddie, you have a great game.”

He added that this year’s charity drive will extend beyond caddies’ welfare to initiatives supporting education and tackling hunger, in partnership with sponsors.

Staged annually for nearly three decades, the Nigeria Cup remains a blend of sporting excellence, community service, and grassroots development.
