First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has commiserated with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and families of victims of Tuesday’s fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which claimed at least ten lives.
In a condolence message issued Thursday in Abuja, Mrs Tinubu extended sympathies to the management and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), United Capital, and United Bank for Africa (UBA), all of whom lost personnel in the tragedy.
“I condole with Gov. Sanwo-Olu, the people of the state, and affected organisations, including FIRS and UBA, over the tragic fire at Afriland Towers that claimed ten lives. May God Almighty comfort the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the departed and the injured during this time of deep grief and pain,” she said.
The First Lady also prayed for the repose of the deceased, speedy recovery for the injured, and strength for bereaved families.
Tuesday’s blaze at Afriland Towers — which houses multiple corporate organisations — left several others injured and destroyed property worth millions of naira. Authorities said the fire began in the inverter room and spread quickly, trapping occupants before emergency services contained it.
The incident, which came the same day another inferno gutted Mandilas Market and adjoining plazas on Lagos Island, has triggered fresh calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards in high-rise commercial buildings.
