Nigeria’s Super Eagles advanced to the final of the 2024 Unity Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana on Wednesday night at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
Cyriel Dessers gave Nigeria an early lead in the 14th minute, finishing clinically after being set up by Sodiq Ismail. Just five minutes later, the advantage was doubled when Ghana’s Razak Simpson inadvertently scored an own goal while attempting to clear a dangerous cross.
The first half was all Nigeria, with the Ghanaians failing to register a single shot on target. Defensive frustration grew for the Black Stars, as Kamaradini Mamudu and Salis Abdul Samed picked up yellow cards within minutes of each other for rash tackles.
Ghana found some rhythm in the second half and managed to pull one back in the 70th minute through substitute Brandon Asante-Thomas, but it wasn’t enough to turn the game around.
Nigeria now progresses to the Unity Cup final, where they will face Jamaica, who booked their place with a 3-2 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.
Ghana head coach Otto Addo had spoken of the match’s importance prior to kickoff, calling it “an opportunity to restore pride and reignite the passion of fans,” but his side fell short in the high-stakes encounter.
