The Nigerian Academy of Science has called on the Federal and State Governments to prioritise investment in scientific research, innovation, and development, describing it as essential for national growth and sustainable development. The statement was issued on Monday by the academy’s President, Abubakar Sambo, and Public Affairs Secretary, Chinedum Babalola.
The academy outlined its 2026 agenda amid concerns over underinvestment in research and development, as well as governance challenges in Nigeria’s educational and research institutions. It stressed that increasing demand for science-based solutions to issues such as climate change, energy transition, public health, food security, and industrial competitiveness makes sustained investment in research more critical than ever.
Highlighting global examples, the academy noted that countries achieving long-term economic growth and technological competitiveness did so through deliberate investments in science, robust research systems, and strong institutions. It urged that investments extend beyond project funding to include human resource development, research infrastructure, and institutional systems that support effective research and innovation.
The academy also emphasised the need for proper governance in universities and research institutes, advocating that appointments to governing councils and leadership positions be merit-based, favouring individuals with relevant academic qualifications and proven experience. It raised concerns about recent appointments of non-specialists to key positions, calling for strict adherence to due process to enhance transparency, accountability, and institutional credibility.
In conclusion, the academy urged federal and state authorities to adopt its 2026 agenda, ensuring that increased investments in research are effectively managed to promote excellence, innovation, and global competitiveness in science and technology. The call comes against a backdrop of persistent underfunding and governance issues, coupled with growing national demand for science-driven solutions to pressing challenges.
