The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have praised President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, for suspending the proposed four percent Free on Board (FOB) levy on imports.
In a statement signed by AON President Abdulmunaf Sarina on Tuesday, the group described the decision as a “clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment, protecting critical sectors of the economy, and promoting sustainable growth.”
The levy, introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service, had drawn strong criticism from manufacturers, importers, and clearing agents, who warned it would fuel inflation, undermine trade competitiveness, and hurt investment. Finance Minister Edun acknowledged these concerns, noting the measure posed risks to trade facilitation, economic stability, and the business climate.
The ON emphasized that the aviation sector would have been particularly hard hit, with higher operational costs threatening service delivery, job security, and the competitiveness of Nigerian airlines.
The operators commended Edun for what they called “exemplary leadership as a listening Minister,” adding that his responsiveness reflected “deep patriotism and a strong commitment to fairness, diligence, and national economic development.”
“This bold and thoughtful intervention will go a long way in safeguarding the aviation sector, protecting jobs, reducing inflationary pressures, and ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global business environment,” the group stated.
The association also reaffirmed its willingness to collaborate with the federal government to strengthen the aviation industry and support the administration’s broader economic agenda.
