The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike from Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued detention of abducted teachers and students by kidnappers.
The directive, issued by the national leadership of the union and signed by the Oyo State Secretary, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, ordered teachers across the state to withdraw their services until further notice. The union said the action was aimed at pressuring authorities to intensify efforts toward rescuing the victims.
According to the NUT, the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and learners has created fear, panic, and hopelessness among teachers, parents, and communities, while discouraging parents from sending their children to school due to growing insecurity.
The union stated that the strike would remain in effect as it continues lawful engagements with the government and security agencies to ensure the safe release of the abductees. Teachers were also urged to remain law-abiding and stay safe at home during the industrial action.
The strike follows the May 15 attack on Community High School in Ahoro-Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where gunmen abducted the school principal, Mrs Rachael Alamu, alongside several teachers and students during school hours, according to the police.
