The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has cautioned journalists in the country, particularly at the state level, against aligning with politicians in disseminating fake or unverified information.
The warning was contained in a communiqué issued after the union’s monthly congress held on Wednesday. The document was jointly signed by NUJ Chairman, Comrade Abiodun Atilola, Secretary Comrade Mosunmola Akinola, and Congress Member Comrade Dayo Adu. It was made available to Newsmen by the union’s state secretary, Olusola Oladapo.
With political activities already building momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the union said the reminder was timely and necessary.
“The congress observed the increasing political activities towards the 2027 general elections, and enjoined journalists to always fact-check information from politicians so that they would not be caught in the web of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation,” the communiqué read.
The NUJ urged media professionals to uphold ethical standards and remain impartial in their reporting. It emphasized that journalists have a critical role to play in preserving democracy and ensuring accurate information reaches the public.
