The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) Kwara State Chapters at the weekend raised concerns over safety of commuters along the Oko Olowo Expressway, Ilorin, as a federal government contractor has just removed the speed breakers the Kwara State Government recently installed.
“We are seriously concerned since the speed breakers were removed by a contractor working on the road. We fear that this action may trigger a new wave of accidents and avoidable loss of lives on the road,” the NURTW and RTEAN chairman said in a joint statement.
The statement, issued in Ilorin, was signed by their chairmen Alhaji Abdulrasak Ariwoola (NURTW) and Alhaji Abdulrahman Olayinka Onikijipa (RTEAN).
The unions urged the federal government to act urgently to restore the speed breakers and put in place other measures to protect lives on the expressway.
