Ojora of Ijora dethrones six chiefs for attending Labour Party campaign

The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyegbemi, has removed six chiefs from their positions for attending a political event without his approval.

The chiefs were said to have participated in the Labour Party’s campaign flag-off in Apapa, ahead of the upcoming local government elections in Lagos State, an act the monarch described as a breach of palace protocol.

During a palace meeting on Monday, Oba Oyegbemi expressed his disapproval, stating that the individuals attended the political event without his consent and allegedly misrepresented him at the gathering.

A statement from the palace explained that the decision to relieve the chiefs of their duties was aimed at preserving order and discipline within the traditional leadership structure.

The affected chiefs are Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale of Oke Ira), Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale of Alafia Dodoro), Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale of Alaba Oro), Chief Idris Ojora (Bale of Abule Kere), Chief Sule Balogun (Balogun of Abule Kere), and Chief Hakeem Oseni (Bale of Mosafejo Amukoko).

Oba Oyegbemi emphasized that the dethronement was not politically motivated but rather a necessary step to uphold the sanctity of the traditional institution.

The palace noted that impersonation of the monarch or failure to seek prior approval for public engagements is a serious offense under customary law and traditions.

No response has yet been issued by the affected chiefs regarding their removal.
