Top football stars become free agents as summer window opens

A host of high-profile footballers officially became free agents on Tuesday, July 1, following the expiration of their contracts the previous day. The development has opened a floodgate of opportunities for clubs across Europe to secure experienced talent without paying transfer fees.

The free movement of players after contract expiration has been a staple of football since the 1995 Bosman ruling, which famously enabled big-name moves such as Sol Campbell’s switch from Tottenham to Arsenal and Michael Ballack’s transfer from Bayern Munich to Chelsea.

According to a Premier League report released Tuesday, several former and current Premier League stars are now on the market. Among the most notable is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who leaves Everton after nearly a decade. The 28-year-old striker scored 71 goals in 273 games, with his standout campaign coming in 2020/21 when he netted 21 goals.

Also available is Thomas Partey, who exits Arsenal after 130 appearances. The Ghanaian midfielder, 32, endured injury spells but ended last season in strong form.

German legend Thomas Müller, 35, is also among the free agents after a historic 755-game stint at Bayern Munich. With limited minutes under new manager Vincent Kompany, Müller appears ready for a fresh challenge.

Nelson Semedo, the former Wolves captain, departs at age 31 after providing stability and leadership in defence over 182 games.

Canadian forward Jonathan David, 25, who tallied 23 goals across all competitions for Lille last season, is attracting serious interest. His age and scoring record make him one of the top options available.

Other seasoned professionals entering free agency include:

• Mario Pašalić (30, Croatia) – leaves Atalanta after seven years.

• Christian Eriksen (33, Denmark) – departs Manchester United after contributing to recent trophy wins.

• Victor Lindelöf (30, Sweden) – ends an eight-year spell at Old Trafford.

• Abdoulaye Doucouré (31, Mali) – vital to Everton’s survival in recent seasons.

Additional names on the free agent list include Olivier Boscagli (PSV), Mason Holgate (Everton), Stefan de Vrij (Inter), Danny Ings (West Ham), Willian (Fulham), Ashley Young (Everton), Ben Mee (Brentford), Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham), Neal Maupay (Everton), and Sergio Reguilón (Tottenham).

With the 2025/26 season fast approaching, the free transfer market is expected to be highly active, offering clubs a cost-effective way to bolster their squads with proven talent.
