On Sunday, 21st September 2025, the dynamic Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, marks her fourth year in office. Under the single five-year tenure policy introduced in 2016, she now begins the final year of an administration focused on consolidating gains and leaving a lasting legacy.
Much has been written about her transformative impact on LASU’s physical and academic landscape. Yet, her most profound contribution lies in the intangible: acts of love, sacrifice, and deep devotion that often escape notice. Her leadership exemplifies what can be described as altruistic stakeholdership – treating LASU not merely as an institution, but as a personal and family project.
One notable example is the state-of-the-art Olatunji-Bello Auditorium at the Epe Campus, a donation by her husband, Hon. Tunji Bello, inspired by her counsel to invest in the university rather than host a personal celebration. This act reflects the family’s commitment to channel resources toward the education and future of LASU students.
The Olatunji-Bello family’s philanthropy extends beyond the auditorium. Since 2011, Hon. Tunji Bello has sustained an annual ₦100,000 endowment for brilliant yet indigent students across five faculties. In 2017, Prof. Olatunji-Bello complemented this with her ₦2.5 million endowment, awarding annual prizes to the best graduating students in MBBS and Physiology.
Her personal devotion to LASU is further illustrated by her enrollment in a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at LASU in 2017, graduating in 2018 while serving as VC – making her the first sitting Vice-Chancellor to be an alumnus of the university.
Her tenure has also seen the completion of landmark projects, including the LASU Students’ Arcade, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, six-storey University Library, Lagos HOMS, Faculty of Education and Arts Annexes, Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Awori House), LASU International School, and the largest hostel expansion in the university’s history. These initiatives have positioned LASU as the largest brick-and-mortar university in Nigeria, with a thriving student population exceeding 60,000.
Beyond infrastructure, Prof. Olatunji-Bello has strengthened academic and professional programs, expanded admission opportunities, and elevated research and innovation initiatives. Her leadership is defined by a devotion that places institutional progress above personal ego, ensuring that inherited projects are completed while new programs and faculties flourish.
As LASU approaches its next chapter, her legacy will be remembered not merely for the visible transformations, but for the love-driven leadership that laid a foundation of excellence, creating opportunities for generations yet unborn.
