Olowo of Owo cautions monarchs against abandoning traditional values

Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, has warned traditional rulers who abandon age-old customs after ascending the throne to either uphold the institution’s practices or step down.

The monarch issued the warning in Akure during a colloquium held to commemorate the 10th coronation anniversary of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi.

Oba Ogunoye was responding to remarks by journalist and scholar, Dr. Festus Adedayo, who criticized the declining adherence to cultural values among contemporary traditional rulers. Dr. Adedayo argued that the traditional institution had lost much of its sacredness, citing the erosion of rituals and cultural norms that once defined the monarchy.

“The traditional institution must redeem itself if it wants to be taken seriously,” Adedayo said. “This can be achieved by preserving ancient practices such as burial rites, sacred appearances, and dignified conduct.”

In his reaction, Oba Ogunoye cautioned against generalizations, stating that criticisms should be directed at specific individuals who flout traditional norms.

“You must identify those who have violated traditions, not make sweeping statements,” the monarch said. “Personally, I am a traditionalist to the core. I lived in the palace with my father for 25 years before becoming Olowo, and I understand the responsibilities.”

He emphasized that becoming an Oba is a personal choice, not a compulsory role. “If you accept to be a king, you must be prepared to abide by the customs. If not, don’t take the title. Our traditions are not repugnant—they are sacred legacies worth preserving.”

Oba Ogunoye also praised the Oyo State Government for maintaining traditional integrity in the recent selection of a new Alaafin of Oyo.

Delivering the keynote address, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described the monarchy as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s identity, predating both colonial rule and oil discovery. He called on governments to invest in cultural institutions as part of nation-building.

Also present at the colloquium were former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Oba of Ilu-Abo, Oba Olu Falae, who chaired the event; Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Secretary to the State Government Dr. Taiye Fasoranti; a representative of the Vice President, Dr. Tope Fasua; Ondo State Attorney General Dr. Kayode Ajulo; Professor Adedayo Afe; and the host, Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi.
