A final-year student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, has been arrested following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of a couple along Igan Road in the Ago-Iwoye area of Ogun State.
The suspect, identified as Victor Onakoya, a 500-level student, was reportedly driving a Toyota Camry when he rammed into a motorcycle carrying the couple. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
According to a senior police officer who spoke under anonymity, Onakoya was taken into custody after a mob attempted to lynch him at the scene of the crash.
Earlier reports indicated that the female passenger died on the spot, while the male rider sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Detomi Hospital, Molipa, Ijebu Ode. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The victims were later identified as Dare Adeyemi and Shadia Oshifuyi, who were said to be a married couple heading toward B3 Junction when the accident occurred.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) had confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday. TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi said the collision involved a Toyota Camry with number plate JJJ 168 GY and a red Bajaj motorcycle with plate number KNN 873 ZY.
“Eyewitnesses reported that reckless driving by the Toyota driver led to a head-on collision with the motorcycle, resulting in immediate fatality,” Akinbiyi said.
A police preliminary investigation revealed that the Camry driver lost control, veered off his lane, and hit the oncoming motorcycle. The divisional police patrol team reportedly responded swiftly, dispersing an irate crowd and preventing the lynching of the suspect and destruction of the vehicle.
The suspect was rescued and taken to the station for questioning, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu Igbo, for autopsy.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
This tragedy comes just days after two fatal crashes on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, including a container-laden truck falling near the Otedola Bridge, causing hours of gridlock and two confirmed deaths.
