Parents, schools must unite to raise digital-age children – experts

Date:

The challenges of parenting in the digital era took centre stage at the 27th valedictory and graduation ceremony of Jextoban Secondary School, Ibafo, Ogun State.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Emmanuel Ojo, called for stronger collaboration between parents and schools in raising morally upright children, noting the complex influences children now face in modern society.

“Child upbringing in this digital age calls for cooperation between parents and the school. Both parties must share the same core values to avoid working at cross purposes,” Ojo said.

He stressed that while schools serve as support systems, the family remains the primary foundation for shaping a child’s behaviour. “If our nation is to stand upright, the process must start from homes, then schools and religious organisations,” he added.

Ojo praised the graduating class for their discipline and academic performance, attributing much of their success to constructive home-school partnerships. He urged the students to remain resilient and guided by the values instilled in them.

“My parting words of admonition: remain focused, be resolute, and dare to be a Daniel. The world has challenges, but with values, you will thrive,” he advised. He also cautioned them against negative peer influence and reminded them to uphold the reputation of their families and school.

The school’s proprietress, Adunola Ojo, echoed the sentiments, charging the students to uphold values of integrity, tolerance, fairness, and moral discipline.

Best graduating student and valedictorian, Abegunde Elizabeth, expressed gratitude to the school, noting its focus on both academic excellence and spiritual growth. “Jextoban is more than an academic institution; it is a God-fearing community that builds us morally and spiritually,” she said.

Delivering the keynote address, former Ecobank Nigeria Managing Director, Patrick Akinwuntan, urged parents to reclaim their central role in child development, warning that the future of society depends on well-rounded youth.

“Our children belong not just to families but to humanity. Their choices affect us all,” he said. Akinwuntan redefined success as service, humility, and impact, not just academic or financial achievements.

“Schools must be more than physics labs. They must forge character—integrity, compassion, ethics. That is true education,” he said.

He concluded by urging graduates to pursue purpose, value relationships, and serve with humility. “God has a unique plan for you. Walk boldly in that purpose, serve others, and shine your light,” Akinwuntan said.
