Party Crisis Deepens as 19 National Assembly Members Dump Camps

Date:

Eighteen members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), signaling a fresh wave of political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election. Their defection notices were formally read during plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

Among the defectors are prominent lawmakers including ADC caucus leader Afam Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency, and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, representing Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia Federal Constituency in Anambra State. Other members span constituencies across Kano, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, and Anambra states, reflecting a broad-based shift.

The development follows recent high-profile exits from the ADC, including former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who both joined the NDC. Their moves appear to have accelerated momentum toward the emerging party as political actors reposition ahead of 2027.

Notably, many of the defecting lawmakers were initially elected under the platforms of the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party before moving to the ADC, and now to the NDC, highlighting ongoing instability and shifting alliances within opposition ranks.

In a related development, Leke Abejide, representing Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State, has defected from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress (APC), further underscoring the fluid political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
