Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, SAN, has said his visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo was aimed at seeking guidance and support to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Turaki, accompanied by executive members of his faction of the party’s National Working Committee and several party leaders, including former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu and ex-Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, met Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library on Saturday.
The delegation arrived at about 11:27 a.m. and held a closed-door meeting with the former president that lasted roughly 40 minutes.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Turaki said the discussions focused on drawing inspiration from Obasanjo’s experience and strengthening the party’s resolve to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
He described Obasanjo as an elder statesman whose record of building strong institutions under the PDP had contributed significantly to Nigeria’s democratic development.
According to Turaki, “As the newly elected PDP leadership, we came to introduce ourselves to our father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to thank him for his contributions to democracy and to seek his guidance, advice and support.”
He added that although dislodging the APC in 2027 may be challenging, the interaction with Obasanjo had reinforced the party’s confidence that the task was achievable.
Turaki said the PDP was battle-ready for the next general elections, adding that the party’s prospects would become clearer with expected victories in the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
In separate remarks, the party’s National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, called on party members to remain united and intensify mobilisation efforts to return the PDP to power.
