The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has disassociated itself from a group of individuals who disrupted a Senate public hearing on a bill seeking to amend the law establishing the institution.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, proposes changing ATBU’s status from a university of science and technology to a conventional university.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Zailani Bappa, the university described the group as impostors and said they were not genuine graduates of ATBU.
According to the statement, the university has produced disciplined students who have served as worthy ambassadors of the institution locally and internationally for over four decades.
The management said it was confident that authentic ATBU graduates would not engage in conduct capable of showing disrespect to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Bappa expressed regret that the disruption caused the adjournment of the public hearing and urged stakeholders to exercise caution in verifying individuals who claim to represent the university.
The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund had begun public hearings on the amendment bill last Thursday before the proceedings were disrupted, leading to an indefinite adjournment.
