Petrol Prices Surge in Abuja Amid Dangote-PENGASSAN Feud

Date:

Nigerians in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are paying more for premium motor spirit (petrol) as prices rose sharply at several filling stations on Monday, October 6, 2025. NNPCL retail outlets in Abuja, including Empire, AA Rano, Shema, and Wuse Zones 4 and 6, have increased petrol prices to between ₦905 and ₦945 per litre, with Empire Filling Station in Gwarimpa selling at the highest rate of ₦945 per litre. Other stations, including MRS, Emedeb, Raniol, and Eterna, sell petrol between ₦885 and ₦910 per litre.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) attributed the hike to supply disruptions caused by last week’s PENGASSAN strike against Dangote Refinery. IPMAN officials, Abubakar Maigandi and Chinedu Ukadike, said the feud between the union and the refinery, coupled with panic buying, created artificial scarcity in Lagos and Abuja. Maigandi assured that prices are expected to normalize in the coming days.

Depot prices of petrol have also risen slightly, with Dangote Refinery selling at ₦844 per litre, while Raniol and Aiteo sell at ₦845 and NIPCO at ₦850 in Lagos State. The two-day strike by PENGASSAN, protesting the mass sacking of Nigerian workers at Dangote Refinery, was suspended after federal government intervention and a resolution between the parties.

In related comment   vice president Kashim S Shettima noted at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit that “Nigeria is bigger than PENGASSAN”, prompting a retort from PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo, who asserted that the country is bigger than Dangote Refinery and the presidency.
