Why Cooking Gas Costs Are Skyrocketing in Lagos, Not Abuja

Date:

The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, has remained stable in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), averaging N1,200 per litre, according to a market survey conducted on Monday. Vendors reported prices ranging from N1,200 to N1,500 per litre, depending on location. A 12.5-kilogram cylinder was being sold for N15,000 in Gwarimpa.

In other parts of Abuja, including Dawaki, Dutse, and Kubwa, LPG prices ranged between N1,200 and N1,400, while some vendors in Lugbe sold gas at N1,500 per kg. This contrasts with parts of Lagos, where prices reportedly rose to between N1,700 and N2,000 per litre following recent supply disruptions.

The Group CEO of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Bayo Ojulari, attributed the Lagos price spike to a feud between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Dangote Refinery, describing the increase as “artificial.” He assured Nigerians that LPG prices would normalise nationwide once supply stabilises.
