Severe rainstorms on Sunday wreaked havoc across parts of Plateau and Niger States, damaging homes, schools, and worship centres in multiple communities.
In the Shimankar District of Shendam Local Government Area, Plateau State, at least 50 houses were destroyed, with the Menkaat community particularly hard-hit. Eyewitnesses reported that the storm ripped off rooftops and caused several buildings to collapse, including two primary schools and a worship centre.
A similar incident was recorded in Kafin Koro, Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, where heavy morning rainfall damaged farmlands and forced residents to seek shelter. Local sources say many affected families are now without homes and in urgent need of assistance.
Reacting to the disaster, Jonathan Vatsa, Special Adviser to the Niger State Governor on Communication, Media, and Strategy, urged residents in vulnerable areas to relocate to safer locations to prevent further tragedy.
