Presidency, Governors Launch Stronger Measures to Defeat Terrorists

Date:

Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors have stepped up efforts to tackle insecurity, combining international military partnerships with moves toward establishing state police. At a high-level meeting in Lagos with members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), both sides signalled a coordinated strategy to confront terrorism, banditry, and related threats nationwide. 🛡️

Tinubu disclosed that his administration is strengthening diplomatic engagements with global partners to secure modern military equipment, intelligence, and training for Nigeria’s security agencies. He cited recent talks with Emmanuel Macron and ongoing discussions with other world leaders, noting that Nigeria is prepared to leverage its international goodwill and credit lines to boost its security capacity.

Describing insecurity as a major barrier to development, the president emphasised the need for closer collaboration between federal and state governments. He urged governors to complement national efforts with grassroots interventions, particularly in supporting vulnerable populations, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in technology and security infrastructure.

On their part, governors revealed plans to submit a legislative framework for state police to the National Assembly. NGF Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said the proposal is being finalised in collaboration with security agencies under the National Security Adviser, reflecting a unified effort to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

The meeting also addressed broader concerns, including potential economic pressures from the Middle East crisis and its impact on inflation. Governors pledged continued cooperation with federal authorities to end security breaches, while the large turnout at the meeting underscored growing political unity in addressing the country’s security challenges.
