The race for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has intensified as aspirants step up consultations and alliances ahead of party primaries expected in about two months. The contest has become more competitive following Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s declaration that he has no preferred successor, raising the stakes among contenders seeking to lead the party into the next governorship election. 🗳️
Among the leading aspirants is Sadiq Suleiman Umar, who is pushing for zoning of the ticket to Kwara North, a region yet to produce a governor since 1999. However, concerns over his relationship with the governor and the zone’s electoral strength have generated debate among party stakeholders about his chances.
From Kwara Central, Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman and Lanre Issa-Onilu are also prominent contenders. While Sulaiman has intensified his campaign visibility, critics question his shifting political alliances. Issa-Onilu, on the other hand, is widely regarded as a strong strategist with broad stakeholder appeal and close ties to the governor, positioning him as a serious contender.
Saliu Mustapha and Yahaya Seriki Gambari are also being considered in the race. Mustapha’s strained relationship with the governor and concerns among party stakeholders may affect his prospects, despite support from some national political figures. Gambari, a businessman and ally of the governor, is seen as financially strong but faces questions about his administrative experience.
Other potential aspirants include Yakubu Danladi-Salihu from Kwara North and Wale Suleiman from Kwara South. While both enjoy support within their respective constituencies, analysts say their broader political networks and acceptance among party leaders could influence their chances as the contest for the APC ticket continues to gather momentum.
