President Tinubu Removes IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Appoints Tunji Disu

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has removed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), as his replacement.

Sources say the removal followed a directive from President Tinubu asking Egbetokun to resign. The instruction was reportedly conveyed during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Egbetokun had been appointed the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023, and his substantive appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

He was 58 at the time of appointment and was due to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, his tenure had been controversially extended by the President prior to his removal.

The appointment of Tunji Disu as IGP marks a significant leadership change at the top of the Nigeria Police Force.
