Raya blames new Premier League ball after Szoboszlai strike

Date:

Arsenal goalkeeper, David Raya, has suggested that the new Premier League ball may have played a role in his inability to stop Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick during their 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Szoboszlai’s strike, which came in the 83rd minute from more than 30 yards out, was enough to hand the Reds all three points and extend their perfect start to the season. The powerful shot swerved away from Raya, who reacted too late to keep it out.

Speaking after the match, Raya admitted that the new ball, manufactured by Puma, behaves differently from the Nike ball previously used in the league. He explained that the ball’s unpredictable movement makes it harder for goalkeepers to judge and react quickly.

“I think it’s a hell of a strike. I remember the ball moving a lot and going away from me,” Raya told Sky Sports. “With the new balls and everything, we still have to adapt. The grip is different, the kick is different, and after years with the Nike ball, it takes time to get used to.”

Despite his disappointment at conceding, the Spanish international promised to improve as he continues adjusting to the new equipment. He stressed that all players face the same challenge and that adapting quickly is key to future performances.

The result sees Liverpool maintain their 100 percent start to the campaign, positioning themselves early in the title race as defending champions. Arsenal, meanwhile, continue their hunt for a first league title in years, having finished runners-up in each of the last three seasons.
