Resident doctors begin nationwide strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has embarked on a nationwide strike after the federal government failed to meet its minimum demands within the 24-hour ultimatum issued earlier this week. The industrial action commenced on Friday, following the expiration of the deadline.

Ultimatum Expired After Virtual NEC Meeting
NARD President, Dr. Osundara Tope Zenith, confirmed that the strike was activated after an Extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held virtually on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. The meeting had representatives from federal, state, and private tertiary hospitals across the country.

Unresolved Welfare Issues Trigger Walkout
The doctors expressed frustration that, despite repeated engagements with stakeholders, critical welfare concerns remained unaddressed. They recalled issuing a three-week ultimatum in July, followed by a 10-day extension, but said the government failed to act.

Non-Payment Of Allowances Tops Grievances
Key grievances include the non-payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to many resident doctors, five months of unpaid arrears from the 25%/35% CONMESS review, and the 2024 accoutrement allowance. Other salary arrears also remain unsettled.

Doctors Condemn MDCN, NPMCN Policies
NARD also faulted the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for downgrading membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons. They further criticised the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) for delays in issuing certificates to qualified candidates.

Strike Threatens Public Healthcare Access
The association demanded immediate release of the 2025 MRTF, settlement of arrears, and recognition of postgraduate membership certificates. Dr. Osundara stressed that the strike became inevitable after the government failed to demonstrate good faith. Public hospitals nationwide are expected to be heavily affected.
