Rivers Assembly Members Urge Withdrawal of Fubara Impeachment Bid

Date:

Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have urged their colleagues to withdraw the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, calling instead for restraint and dialogue.

The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II), made the appeal on Wednesday, days after two other legislators publicly took a similar stance against the impeachment move.

Earlier on Monday, Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo and Peter Abbey had broken ranks with the majority, warning that the escalating dispute between the executive and legislative arms of government should be handled with caution.

The four lawmakers advocated alternatives to impeachment, suggesting that reconciliation remains possible amid the political standoff in the state.

The appeal was made during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, where the legislators said they had come under pressure from political leaders and stakeholders within and outside Rivers State to exercise leniency.

Speaking at the briefing, Nwankwo, the Minority Leader of the House and representative of Omuma Constituency, said lawmakers had been urged to reconsider the impeachment process and pursue peaceful means of resolving the crisis.

Abbey, who represents Degema Constituency, acknowledged that the governor may have breached constitutional provisions but stressed that such issues could be addressed without resorting to impeachment, adding that the governor must also take steps to prevent a recurrence.
