Rohr Laments as Benin Miss World Cup

Date:

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has expressed deep disappointment following his team’s 4–0 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture on Tuesday.

The Cheetahs were completely outclassed by Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, a result that ended their hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time in history.

South Africa topped Group C to clinch automatic qualification, while Nigeria’s emphatic win was enough only to secure a place in the playoffs.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Rohr, who previously managed the Super Eagles, admitted the result was difficult to take.

“We’re disappointed because our dream was to play at the World Cup,” Rohr said. “It’s a big disappointment, that is my initial reaction. However, we have a young team and we will continue to build.”

The defeat marks the end of Benin’s qualifying campaign, but Rohr insisted that the experience would serve as a valuable lesson for his youthful squad.
