Senate moves to establish FCT Sports Commission

Senate on Wednesday set machinery in motion for the establishment of a sports commission in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, just like some state governments.

Towards this end, a bill for an Act to establish the FCT Sports Commission, sponsored by Senator Philip Aduda (PDP FCT), has scaled through the second reading on the floor of the upper legislative chamber.

Senator Aduda said that the commission, when established will be charged with the responsibility of administering, encouraging and developing sports and games in the FCT.

He added that the the bill, if assented to by the president, will encourage the development, organization and participation in sports in Abuja

The lawmaker further informed that the commission will co-ordinate and integrate efforts to raise the standard of performance in sports as well as promote co-operation with other sports bodies, their physical fitness and general well-being.

The commission is also expected to organize, assist financially the participation in sports at inter-state, national and international levels, provide and maintain sports centers and facilities for the training of Nigerians as instructors and organizers of sports.

Senator Aduda further stated that the bill will bring FCT sports to be in line with international best practice in the areas of sports administration.

After deliberation, the bill is referred to Senate Committee on Sports for further legislative actions and to report back in four weeks.
