Senator Umeh Clarifies Obi–Amaechi Meeting, Says Atiku Should Step Down

Date:

Senator Victor Umeh has clarified that the recent meeting between Peter Obi and former Rotimi Amaechi was a routine political consultation and not a negotiation for either figure to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race. Speaking on Arise TV, Umeh described claims that the visit involved discussions about stepping down as a misrepresentation.

He said the meeting reflected ongoing consultations among opposition figures working within the African Democratic Congress platform, stressing that dialogue among aspirants is necessary to build consensus ahead of the election. According to him, such engagements are normal in the process of aligning interests toward a unified political strategy.

Umeh noted that it would be unrealistic for all opposition aspirants to remain in the race until the end, explaining that discussions and negotiations are essential steps toward arriving at a common position capable of strengthening the opposition’s chances.

The senator also advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to consider stepping aside after multiple presidential attempts since 2003, suggesting that younger leaders with fresh ideas should be given the opportunity to lead the opposition’s push for change.

He further warned that opposition aspirants must prioritise the expectations of Nigerians over personal ambition, stressing that defeating the ruling party would require presenting a credible alternative capable of convincing voters seeking a different direction for the country.
