Yusuf Defection Rumours Rekindle Kano Emirate Tensions

Speculation over a possible defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reignited concerns around the unresolved Kano emirate crisis involving Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

Political observers say the rumoured move could further destabilise the already fragile balance between tradition and politics in Kano, where the prolonged emirship dispute has remained a source of tension since 2020.

Reports indicate that Yusuf recently held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, a development believed to be linked to his alleged plans to defect to the ruling party after several postponements.

The emirate crisis began under former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who dethroned Sanusi in 2020 and installed Bayero following the creation of additional emirates. When Yusuf assumed office in 2023, his administration repealed the law, restored the single emirate structure, and reinstated Sanusi, while Bayero was asked to vacate the palace.

Bayero, however, rejected the decision and relocated to the Nassarawa mini palace under heavy security, challenging his removal in court. In March, the Court of Appeal advised all parties to maintain the status quo pending a Supreme Court ruling, leaving the matter unresolved.

Analysts warn that Yusuf’s alleged defection could weaken Sanusi’s position, particularly if political alignments between the state and federal governments shift. Supporters of Bayero view the development as a possible opening for renewed legal and political efforts to reclaim the throne.

Speaking on Arise Television, political analyst Sumner Sambo cautioned that a defection could deepen the crisis and pose security risks, noting that Sanusi currently lacks formal police protection. He warned that any attempt to reinstate Bayero could spark unrest in the state.

Another analyst, Nduka Odo of Peaceland University, Enugu, said the fate of the rival emirs largely depends on political relationships rather than institutional safeguards, describing the situation as evidence of systemic failure. He criticised the judiciary for not conclusively resolving the dispute.

Similarly, civil rights advocate Olu Omotayo blamed the prolonged crisis on judicial delays, describing the existence of two emirs as an abnormality that undermines governance and security in Kano.

As uncertainty persists, observers caution that any political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections could further inflame tensions unless the courts decisively resolve the emirship dispute.

2027: Tinubu is APC’s biggest asset – Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s most valuable asset, expressing confidence in his prospects for a second term in 2027. Yilwatda made the remarks during the APC Northwest Youth Mobilisation Meet-and-Greet programme in Abuja, hosted by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo.

Yilwatda highlighted factors he believes will strengthen Tinubu’s reelection bid, including increasing youth participation, tangible policy outcomes, the APC’s expanding national presence, and the use of data-driven mobilisation strategies. He noted that the party’s growing grassroots influence has positioned it as “the largest political party in Africa,” with continued support from governors, National Assembly members, market women, farmers, and students.

The APC chairman stressed the importance of party unity and loyalty, urging members to support both the party and the president. “This party is your biggest asset. The President is our biggest asset. Let us stand by this party,” Yilwatda said, emphasizing cohesion as a key element in the party’s success.

Yilwatda’s remarks come amid ongoing preparations by the APC to consolidate its base and mobilize support ahead of the 2027 general elections, focusing on youth engagement and strengthened nationwide outreach.

  • Shettima Replacement Could Undermine Tinubu’s Reelection, APC Says

Shettima Replacement Could Undermine Tinubu’s Reelection, APC Says

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has rejected moves to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 election, warning that such a decision would be a “political miscalculation” that could jeopardize Tinubu’s reelection. The warning comes amid reports that some party elements are advocating for a Christian candidate from the North to replace Shettima, following the Vice President’s omission from a recent APC North-East banner.

In a statement on Thursday, the Forum, led by Chairman Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, argued that dropping Shettima would weaken the party’s electoral position in the North. It noted that the North currently lacks a Christian candidate with sufficient grassroots support and national appeal to complement Tinubu’s ticket. The statement emphasized that the Muslim-Muslim ticket contributed to Tinubu’s victory in 2023 and cautioned against letting religious considerations dictate political strategy.

The Forum also dismissed suggestions that foreign governments might influence the party’s decision, stressing that Nigeria is a sovereign nation. “The Muslim-Muslim ticket gave us victory in 2023. Nigeria is independent, and nobody is going to dictate to us,” the statement said, warning that external pressure could disrupt democratic processes and provoke conflict.

The controversy over Shettima’s future resurfaced amid renewed debates on the APC’s electoral strategy and ticket composition. The Forum argued that replacing Shettima would not attract new votes but could alienate core northern supporters, potentially benefiting opposition candidates, including Peter Obi of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The group urged Tinubu to maintain the status quo to secure victory in 2027.

  • Lagos APC Hails EU’s Nigeria Delisting

Lagos APC Hails EU’s Nigeria Delisting

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed the European Union’s decision to remove Nigeria from its list of high-risk countries for money laundering and terrorism financing.

The party described the move as a strong endorsement of Nigeria’s ongoing reforms and evidence that the country is making steady progress in strengthening its financial and regulatory systems. The EU decision also affected South Africa, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mozambique and Tanzania.

In a statement on Saturday, the Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said Nigeria’s delisting was the result of deliberate and sustained efforts by the Federal Government.

“This delisting is not accidental,” Oladejo said. “It reflects sustained improvements in Nigeria’s financial governance architecture, stronger regulatory oversight, improved inter-agency coordination, and a renewed commitment to transparency and global compliance.”

He added that the decision validated reforms aimed at tightening safeguards, improving enforcement and aligning the country with international best practices.

According to Oladejo, the development has significant economic implications, including restoring investor confidence, easing cross-border financial transactions and reducing compliance burdens for Nigerian businesses.

He said the delisting sends a clear signal to the global community that Nigeria is open for business in a credible and responsible manner.

The APC spokesman also took a swipe at opposition critics, saying the decision undermines efforts to portray Nigeria negatively abroad. “Independent international institutions have verified a different story—one of progress, discipline and reform,” he said.

The Lagos APC commended the Federal Government for its resolve and urged Nigerians to take pride in the achievement, stressing that consistent reforms, rather than rhetoric, are improving Nigeria’s global standing.

Oladejo called on stakeholders to support ongoing reforms and “reject the politics of pessimism,” adding that Nigeria is gradually regaining trust and credibility on the international stage.

  • Lai Mohammed Credits Media Strategy for APC’s 2023 Win

Lai Mohammed Credits Media Strategy for APC’s 2023 Win

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said a coordinated media strategy highlighting the achievements of the Muhammadu Buhari administration played a key role in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 general election.

Mohammed made the claim in his new book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, which chronicles his experiences in government between 2015 and 2023.

According to him, the strategy was developed amid persistent claims by opposition parties that the APC-led administration lacked tangible achievements and did not deserve another term in office.

He described the narrative as a deliberate attempt to discredit the government ahead of the polls, noting that repetition was used to entrench the claims in public discourse. “As the popular aphorism goes, ‘Say it loud, say it often, and it no longer matters if it’s true,’” Mohammed wrote.

In response, he said his ministry adopted a two-pronged approach: systematically showcasing government achievements and countering what he described as misleading opposition narratives.

Mohammed said that on October 18, 2022 — about 130 days to the general election — the ministry launched the President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) Administration Scorecard Series, covering achievements from 2015 to 2023.

Under the initiative, ministers were required to present evidence-based reports of accomplishments in their sectors, followed by interactive question-and-answer sessions with journalists to allow for scrutiny and clarification.

He added that the presentations were amplified through a multi-platform communication strategy spanning traditional and digital media to reach a broad audience.

The former minister said the effort culminated on February 22, 2023, three days before the presidential election, with the launch of legacy documentation tools, including documentaries, testimonial series, print and electronic compendiums, and an online legacy portal.

Mohammed argued that anchoring the campaign on documented performance shifted the dynamics of the election, compelled opposition parties to respond to verifiable records, and helped the APC reconnect with undecided voters while countering misinformation.

  • Ogun APC Begins E-Registration to Strengthen Party

Ogun APC Begins E-Registration to Strengthen Party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has launched an electronic registration and re-registration exercise to mobilize its members, strengthen internal cohesion, and prepare for future elections.

Governor Dapo Abiodun described the initiative as a key opportunity for party members to deepen their commitment to APC, which he hailed as the largest and most successful political party in Africa.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. (Mrs.) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the Governor said the digital registration will enable new members to join the party while providing a transparent, technology-driven membership database.

He emphasized that the electronic process will reduce manipulation and fraudulent practices, enhance accuracy, and ensure efficient data management in line with international best practices for political organizations.

“This is a collective responsibility. Our leaders, ward executives, and field officers must work together to deliver a seamless, inclusive, and hitch-free registration process. The era of fake or inflated membership figures is over,” Governor Abiodun said.

APC State Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, described the exercise as a unifying and strengthening initiative rather than a personal or transactional process.

“This registration is not about personal gain; it is about consolidating our strength as a party and positioning APC for continued leadership and electoral success,” Sanusi said.

He urged party leaders across the 236 wards of Ogun State to fully support the exercise and assured members that additional registration centers and operators would be deployed where necessary to accommodate all prospective members.

The e-registration drive is part of APC’s broader strategy to engage supporters, improve internal organization, and ensure readiness for upcoming elections.

Party leaders and stakeholders have been called upon to mobilize members across the state to guarantee mass participation and the success of the exercise.

  • Oyo APC Pledges Reclaim Governorship, Support Tinubu 2027

Oyo APC Pledges Reclaim Governorship, Support Tinubu 2027

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has declared its readiness to challenge Governor Seyi Makinde’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration in the 2027 elections.

Party leaders said they are united and strategically repositioned to reclaim strongholds and deliver votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

The statement was made at the grand finale of the 14-Federal Constituency Tour organized by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Ibadan North Federal Constituency. Former Senate Leader and Oyo State Ambassador for Renewed Hope, Senator Teslim Folarin, described Ibadan North as a traditional APC stronghold.

Folarin attributed the party’s loss in last year’s federal constituency by-election to internal divisions but insisted the situation has changed. “Ibadan North is a stronghold of APC. The division within our party led to PDP’s fluke victory. Today, we are united and ready to deliver Tinubu and dislodge the dead PDP from Agodi in 2027,” he said.

He further claimed that defections from PDP and other parties are strengthening APC, adding that the party has become the “only surviving party in Oyo State” as supporters align with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Dr. (Mrs.) Florence Ajimobi, wife of former Oyo Governor, praised APC leaders for maintaining unity and building confidence at the grassroots. She called for continued discipline and organization ahead of 2027.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, highlighted the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration and urged Nigerians to support the APC to sustain the country’s progress.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli, chief host of the Unity and Peace rally, said the event reflects the growing support for President Tinubu and the party’s plans to reclaim the governorship and other elective positions in Oyo State.

The rally also saw hundreds of defections from PDP and Labour Party. Notable defectors include former Council Chairman Hon. Yusuf Shuab, former PDP Local Government Chairman Hon. Seun Adelore, and Labour Party members Hon. Babatunde Olugbenga and Hon. Afeez Abiola, who cited good governance and inclusive leadership as reasons for joining APC.

With the conclusion of the 14-Federal Constituency Tour, party leaders—including Senators Abdulfatai Buhari, Yunus Akintunde, and Ayo Adeseun—said the next phase will focus on sustained grassroots engagement, voter mobilization, and promotion of the Renewed Hope Agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

  • Grassroots Group Backs Tinubu, Akpabio Ahead of 2027

Grassroots Group Backs Tinubu, Akpabio Ahead of 2027

A political support group in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has launched a grassroots mobilisation drive ahead of the 2027 general elections to support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.

The group, known as Grassroots Generals for Good Governance (G4), said it would also work for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Umo Eno and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area.

Speaking at a New Year meeting in Abak, the national coordinator of G4, Dr Emmanuel Udosen, said the group comprises prominent stakeholders drawn from across the local government and is committed to delivering electoral victories for the APC in 2027.

Udosen said Abak recorded the highest number of votes for Tinubu in Akwa Ibom State during the 2023 presidential election, adding that the group intends to surpass that performance in the next polls.

According to him, G4 plans to establish structures at ward, unit and village levels to drive voter mobilisation, registration and collection of Permanent Voter Cards in line with directives issued by the state government.

“We are aligning with the governor’s directive on voter registration and PVC collection ahead of 2027. G4 will take the lead in mobilising the grassroots to strengthen our voting base,” Udosen said.

He attributed the group’s confidence to what he described as growing unity among political leaders in the state, expressing optimism that APC’s vote tally in Abak would significantly increase in 2027.

Udosen also commended the Abak Local Government chairperson for her role in ongoing voter registration efforts and urged other stakeholders to support the exercise.

At the meeting, members affirmed the appointment of a Board of Trustees, with Prof. Nkereuwem Etukudo named chairman, alongside other political and community leaders from the area.

  • PDP Chieftain Urges Bauchi, Zamfara Governors To Stay

PDP Chieftain Urges Bauchi, Zamfara Governors To Stay

A senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Muhammadu Abdullahi Sugar, has called on the governors of Bauchi and Zamfara States to resist pressures to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in Kano, Sugar warned that alleged attempts by the APC-led federal government to coerce opposition governors could undermine Nigeria’s democratic system.

He specifically urged Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed and Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Dare to remain committed to the PDP, emphasizing the importance of respecting the mandate given by voters.

Sugar noted that recent defections by elected officials have raised concerns about political intimidation and the erosion of democratic values.

He argued that switching to the ruling party would not address the country’s pressing challenges, and suggested that some governors who had defected did so under undue pressure.

Acknowledging that the PDP had lost members to defections, Sugar insisted that such movements would not weaken the party’s resolve ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He expressed confidence that the performance of PDP governors, particularly in northern states, would enhance the party’s credibility and restore public trust.

Sugar stressed that political loyalty and adherence to electoral mandates are critical for strengthening democracy and countering perceived manipulations by the ruling party.

The PDP chieftain concluded that sustaining opposition unity is essential for promoting accountable governance and providing Nigerians with credible alternatives.

  • Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed Affirms Loyalty To Labour Party

Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed Affirms Loyalty To Labour Party

Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed has reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party (LP), insisting he remains loyal to the platform that nominated him as the vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

Baba-Ahmed, 56, was the running mate of Peter Obi in the last presidential contest, which the LP candidate lost to Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Since the election, Obi left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which now serves as the base for a coalition aiming to challenge the APC in the 2027 general elections.

During a press briefing at the LP national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed stated that he would not follow Obi to the ADC.

The former lawmaker, who represented Kaduna North, said he is prepared to serve the nation ahead of 2027, focusing on contributing to Nigeria’s recovery and development.

He expressed skepticism about the ADC, describing those behind the coalition as “disgruntled politicians” and saying he does not share confidence in the party.

Baba-Ahmed’s remarks underscore a clear division within the political landscape as parties and coalitions position themselves for the next general elections.

The senator’s loyalty to the Labour Party highlights his intention to continue his political journey on the platform that brought him to national prominence.

Political analysts say such declarations could influence voter alignment and candidate selection in the upcoming polls.

As the 2027 elections approach, the LP and its members are expected to consolidate their strategies while navigating defections and coalition-building across the country.
