    339 die in road crashes in Ogun – FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday said that 339 human lives were lost in various road accidents across Ogun stayte from January till date.

    Mr Ahmed Umar, the State Sector Commander, disclosed this during a special intervention sensitisation campaign on gridlock and crash prone, held at ConOil junction Magboro axis on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    Umar stated that 935 road traffic crashes were recorded across the state , saying that they claimed the lives of 339 people while FRSC rescued 2,359 others with various injuries to nearby hospitals.

    The FRSC boss cautioned motorists against speeding and dangerous driving, saying that a lot of accidents were avoidable.

    The sector commander expressed worries about the post-construction management of speed on Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.

    He explained there had been increased collaboration among FRSC , the Police, Army and NSCDC to curb route violation, lane indiscipline and other traffic offences on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    ” We are also proposing strategic activities to Ogun State Government, including regular drivers training in 2023, to foster compliance with traffic regulations and minimise crashes.

    “Even though the ongoing road re-construction work reduced the allowance for speed between Ibafo and Kara/OPIC, route violation, especially by motorcycle riders has been a major cause of accidents along this stretch of the expressway,” he said.

    Umar urged motorists to obey speed limits while also calling on motorcycle riders to refrain from using the expressway and comply with the 50km/hr Speed Limit along feeder roads.

    “All motorists are urged to avoid the intake of drugs and alcohol before and while driving and rest for at least 30 minutes after every four hours of driving.

    “We have also commenced joint patrols with NDLEA to apprehend motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

    The Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC RS2.2, Peter Kibo, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal, Mr Lasisi Ogundele, said that challenges encountered were mostly okada riders and vehicles driving against traffic.

    He also stressed that some pedestrians who failed to use the foot bridge also cause road accidents.

    He advised drivers not to drink before and while driving , adding that it was important to desist from such act.

    The Federal Controller of Roads in the state, Mrs Forosola Oloyede, said that the sensitisation would enhance safety and reduce carnage on the roads.

    She advised motorists to drive within the speed limit, saying that they should drive with caution and be considerate of other road users.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to observe 30-minute rest after every four-hour journey.

    Mr Dauda Biu, the Acting Corps Marshal of Corps, stated this at the end of year Special Intevention Sensitisation Campaign for Cridlock and Crash Prone Areas on Friday in Jos.

    Biu, who was represented by Alphonsus Godwin, the Sector Commander of the Corps in Plateau, said that fatigue remains one of major causes of Road Traffic Crashes on the highways.

    He explained that the special campaign aimed at sensitising motorists and indeed all road users on the need to adhere to a traffic regulations particularly during the yuletide.

    ‘“Fatigue is one of the major causes of road traffic crashes on our roads; because drivers are just after getting to their destinations, they find it very hard to stop and rest.

    ‘“So, we want to use this opportunity to advice motorists to rest for 30 minutes after a journey of four hours.

    ‘“That way, we will minimise the risk of accidents while travelling to distant locations,” he said.

    The acting corps marshal also warned drivers to desist from speeding, night journeys, overloading, use of expired tyres and dangerous overtaking.

    He also advised passengers to correct and caution drivers whenever they disobey traffic regulations.

    Earlier, Mr Calvin Akaagerger, the Bukuru Unit Commander of the corps, warned against unqualified and underage driving, adding that anyone caught would not be spared.

    Akaagerger also advised drivers to conduct proper mechanical checks on their vehicles before embarking on long journeys.

    The campaign had the theme “’Driving Tired is as Dangerous as Driving Drunk: Observers 30 Minutes Rest Period after Every Four Hours”.

    Two FRSC officers crushed to death by truck in Akwa Ibom


    Two officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps were on Friday killed in an accident involving their patrol van and a speeding truck along Ikot-Ikpene – Aba route.

    The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO) Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Mr Bisi Kazeem in a statement on Friday in Abuja said the crash was due to excessive speed of driver of a DAF articulated truck who lost control and hit the patrol van while trying to dodge a pothole along the on the road

    “According to preliminary investigation , the fatal crash involved FRSC Patrol Vehicle and a white coloured truck.

    “The road crash affected a total of eight male adults, out of which two sustained severe injuries, two were killed while the remaining four passengers were rescued without any injuries.

    “The injured persons have been taken to Ikot Ekpene General hospital and the dead deposited in the mortuary of the same hospital,” he said.

    Kazeem quoted the Acting Corps Marshal FRSC Dauda Biu as decrying the incessant knock down and crushing of patrol operatives by motorists.

    The FRSC boss said that the killing of the two officers was part of the recklessness of some drivers who have continuously violated the legally prescribed speed limit.

    Biu pledged the resolve of the Corps to apprehend perpetrators of the deadly act and make them to face the full wrath of the law.

    11 burnt beyond recognition in Kogi multiple crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps has said that 11 persons were burnt beyond recognition in a multiple crash along Ejule-Ochadamu by Olofu Bridge, Ochadamu area of Kogi State.

    FRSC Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem in a statement released on Thursday, November 10, said the unfortunate mishap involved 20 vehicles.

    Kazeem who noted that the crash was avoidable and unfortunate, called on drivers to regularly maintain their vehicles.

    The statement read;

    “The crash investigation team revealed that the fatal crash involved a total of 18 people. Out of the number, a total of seven victims comprising three males and four females sustained various degrees of injuries, while the remaining 11 whose sexuality could not be ascertained at the time of carrying out the rescue were burnt beyond recognition,” the statement read.

    “The investigation further revealed that the main causes of the crash and subsequent fire outbreak that claimed the innocent lives of the victims are road obstruction and break failure; a mechanical deficiency that impacted negatively on the functionality of the braking system of the vehicle.

    “As at the time of this statement, the emergency rescue team of the Corps has concluded the rescue of the injured persons to the hospital while the burnt victims were also evacuated.”

    FRSC reacts to officer kicking pregnant woman in Ondo


    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has dismissed as fake, a report that it’s personnel kicked a pregnant woman in the stomach along Akure highway on Saturday.

    The State Sector Commander of FRSC, Ezekiel SonAllah dismissed the report in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Akure.

    The report shared on the Twitter claimed that the woman bled after she was allegedly kicked by a road marshal on Saturday along Akure highway.

    According to the sector commander, the woman was neither kicked not manhandled as claimed.

    He said that the vehicle she was in was only forced to stop when the driver refused to obey directive to stop and attempted to run over two marshals.

    SonAllah claimed that the vehicle was overloaded and the driver did not use seat belt.

    According to him, two vehicles were coming from keji in Osun going to Ogbese in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo state when the officials of FRSC stopped them but one riggled his way and drove off.

    The sector commander alleged that the second vehicle also did not want to stop, and the driver faced one Marshal Aboluja with the car in his attempt to escape.

    He further alleged that the driver also attempted to run over another marshal, Olamigoke, before the vehicle was forced to stop with the help of other team members.

    “Immediately the vehicle stopped the passengers came out and started wailing, on getting there a particular woman alleged that she was hit, but nothing was wrong with the woman, no nose bleeding or any bleeding.”

    He said that when the woman insisted that she was in pain, the marshals took her to a nearby hospital.

    “It is not as people are painting it, rather it was Marshal Olamigoke who was injured on the ear.

    “We had to call the Scorpion Squad of Nigeria Police to help calm the situation while the driver was arrested.

    “We therefore notify the general public and well meaning Nigerians that the information/news spreading through a Twitter handle @YemieFash about Federal Road Safety Officer in Akure kicking a woman on the stomach and blood was gushing out was fake and false!

    “As no such incident nor a trace of it ever happened. We use this medium to pray the general public to discountenance and disregard the fake rumour.

    “We remain ever committed to maintaining safer motoring environment as we go on to discharge our lawful duties,” he said.

    Ember months: Abide by traffic rules, regulations– FRSC

    The Niger Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC ), Corp Commander Kumar Tsukwam, had called on residents to abide by traffic rules and regulations to save lives.

    Tsukwam made the call on Monday at the Sabon Wuse Unit Command of the Corp while flagging-off the Ember months campaign.

    He said that more caution needed to be applied during these ember months to demystify the belief that the months are jinxed.

    Tsukwam said that heavy traffic, impatience, lack of complying with rules and regulations were primary causes of traffic crashes.

    He noted that a number of giant steps are being recorded by Nigeria in ensuring safer commuting in West Africa.

    He said that Nigeria spearheaded the establishment of the West African Road safety Organisation in order to unify road safety practices in the region.

    “This has encouraged many West African countries to emulate Nigeria by establishing their own road safety outfits.

    “Countries like Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea Bissau are emulators of Nigeria’s FRSC,” Tsukwam said.

    The Corp Commander, however, noted that these countries are recording better success at road crash reduction.

    He attributed this success to these countries citizens that abide by laws and sense of respect for rules and regulations.

    He urged Nigerians to obey traffic rules and regulations in their motherland like they do while in other countries.

    Commenting on the bad condition of most roads in the country, he said the Corps was collaborating with the Federal Road Management Agency (FERMA) on it.

    He also urged road transport union workers to avoid congestion on the roads by locating their parks in suitable places.

    The commander said this would engender appropriate parking, picking and loading of passengers by drivers.

    FRSC cautions politicians against reckless driving during campaigns


    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged political parties to respect and obey traffic rules during campaigns as only the living rules.

    The corps also urged all drivers to avoid speeding and recklessness while on the road.

    The call was made during the launch of the ember months campaign in Ondo State on Thursday.

    Mr Uakhemen Ojeamiren, the Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ondo states flagged off the campaign at Ilesha motor park in Akure.

    The theme of the 2022 ember months campaign is “Avoid Speeding, Avoid Overloading And Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive”.

    Ojeamiren said the ember months were characterised by high vehicular movements and more accidents because of the tendency of drivers to be impatient and in a hurry.

    He said that it was imperative for motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, intake of alcohol and use of expired tyres to avoid traffic accidents.

    The zonal officer said that the corps had undertaken numerous enlightenment programmes in the media, motor parks and places of worship on the need for safe driving.

    “I am appealing to motorists particularly the people of Ondo state to desist and have attitudinal change while driving to arrive safety during the yuletide.

    “Drivers must be conscious while driving and avoid speeding, avoid use of expired tyres and ensure that they have their driving licence with them,” he said.

    Also, Ezekiel SonAllah, the Sector Commander, said it was important for stakeholders to collaborate and ensure safety on the road.

    He said already, the command had recorded about 20 per cent road accidents of the figure recorded within the same period in 2021.

    According to him, 126 road traffic crashes involving 879 persons were recorded during the ember months in 2021.

    He said that out of the figure, 148 were injured and 96 died, adding that at the moment the command has barely recorded 20 per cent of what it did in the previous year.

    “I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to political parties to respect and obey traffic rules and avoid reckless driving during campaigns as only the living rules.

    “The command is out to remind you that you can only celebrate when you arrive alive, hence the need for united efforts against wrong use of the road,” he said.

    The sector commander said erring driver would be dealt with decisively and assured that the road marshals would continue to take measures to save the lives of road users.

    Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, represented by his Senior Adviser on Transport, Tobi Ogunleye, pledged more support to the FRSC to discharge its duties.

    Akeredolu said the government had established a driving school to provide lessons and orientation for drivers, to ensure safe driving culture.

    “We have re-launched the state Passenger Transit Safety Insurance Scheme where every passenger is covered in case of accident for free medical treatment.

    “We will continue to construct and rehabilitate more roads, because the lives of our people is more important to us.

    “We therefore call on other major stakeholders to join hands with the FRSC to save lives especially on highways,” he said.

    The campaign was attended by the state Commandant of NSCDC, Olayinka Olatundun; representatives of the Police, Army, NDLEA and DSS, as well as the Deji of Akure, among others.

    New FRSC boss, Fredrick Ogidan assumes duty in Kwara


    A new Sector Commander of the Kwara State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps,  (FRSC) has assumed duty.

     

    He is Corp Commander Fredrick Ade Ogidan, ROYAL NEWS reports.

     

    According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Route Commander, Dapo James, it was gathered that the new FRSC boss succeeds ACM Jonathan Owoade who is on transfer zone 6 PortHacourt following his recent promotion.

     

    “Until his new appointment, Corp Commander Fredrick Ogidan was the Kaduna state sector head of operations. He had resumed fully on Saturday 30th April, 2022.

    “In his maiden meeting with the staff, he expressed his happiness and promised to work with the entire staff in creating safe motoring environment in Kwara state.

    “Familiarization visit to sister agencies and stake holders will commence soonest after the salah special patrol operations”, the statement reads.

    FRSC Board promotes 445 officers


    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has approved the promotion of 264 Deputy Route Commanders to the rank of Route Commanders.

    The FRSC Board also promoted 181 Assistant Route Commanders to the rank of Deputy Route Commanders, bringing to 445 the total number of personnel promoted.

    FRSC Board Chairman, Alhaji Bukhari Bello, disclosed this in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem on Wednesday in Abuja.

    Bello, who oversaw the promotion exercise, urged the newly promoted personnel to be more diligent and to rededicate themselves to achieving the organisation’s corporate mission.

    He said that eradicating road traffic crashes and creating a safe motoring environment were the mandate of the organisaion.

    Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi said that the promotion exercise was part of FRSC’s drive towards rewarding excellence.

    Oyeyemi enjoined the promoted personnel to be more committed and to put in their best, stressing that their new ranks called for more focus, dedication and commitment.

    The statement also said that the FRSC reviewed the first and second quarters performance of the National Drivers Licence Identity Management and Card Production System.

    Oyeyemi pledged the corps determination to enhance the system and make it easier for motorists to acquire driver`s licence, irrespective of their locations nationwide.

    According to him, to enhance the general performance of the system, the corps is keen on providing mobile workstations where driver’s licences can be processed.

    “This move is geared towards entrenching ease of doing business, encourage patronage and ensure the eradication of encumbrances encountered by applicants, especially in remote areas.

    FRSC advocates 30km-per-hour speed limit for all vehicles in Bauchi


    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in Bauchi state, on Monday advocated for a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour in urban or built up areas for all categories of vehicles in the state.

    The recommendation is contained in a statement by Mr Yusuf Abdullahi, the Bauchi Sector Commander, and made available to newsmen by Mr Rilwanu Suleimanu, the FRSC Public Relations Officer in the State.

    According to the statement, the corps observed that speeding was responsible for about 30 per cent of crashes in Nigeria.

    Abdullahi explained that the corps would be using the 6th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, which will run from 17 to 23 May, 2021, to carry out an advocacy programme where people in the state would be educated on the issue.

    “The 6th UN Global Road Safety Week will focus on the issue of speed.

    “The Week advocates for safer streets motoring by making 30 km/h speed limits, the norm for cities worldwide in places where people mix with traffic.

    “The Week is concerned about policy commitments at national and local levels to deliver the 30 km/h speed limits in urban areas and to generate local support for such low speed measures in order to create safe, healthy traffic flow within Urban cities globally.

    “As a lead agency in Road Safety Management and administration in Nigeria, FRSC is hosting the event and embarks on nationwide advocacy to replicate this global activity in selected Nigerian Cities.

    “Pursuant to this, the Bauchi State command of the FRSC organises public education campaign programmes to inculcate the norm of 30km/hr speed limits among road users,” he said.

    He called on the general motoring public to always adhere to the maximum legal speed limit while in the city or in built up areas so as to prevent crashes, its attendant injuries as well as its fatalities.

    Abdullahi, who further stressed the need to avoid speeding which was considered among the critical traffic violations with high risk factor, said speeding leads to increase in the degree of crash severity, resulting in more fatalities or injuries.

    The sector commander explained that more damage is caused to vehicles involved in speeding when they crash, thereby increasing the likelihood of such vehicles not drivable after crash.

    “Speeding also leads to extra fuel consumption and frequent replacement of auto parts, among others,” he said.

    The Public advocacy programme would include media charts, road shows, visits to hospitals and advocacy visits to stakeholders, including policy makers and others.
