The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to disburse ₦2.525 billion to each university, ₦2.056 billion to Colleges of Education, and ₦1.871 billion to polytechnics under its 2026 intervention cycle.
The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arch. Sonny Echono, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a stakeholders’ workshop with heads of beneficiary institutions, where allocation letters for the 2026 intervention were formally issued.
Echono said the allocations represent about 90.75 per cent of total available funds, made up of 50 per cent annual direct disbursements and 43.75 per cent special direct disbursements. He explained that 271 tertiary institutions would benefit under the annual direct intervention, regardless of their age, size or student population.
According to him, the funds are aimed at strengthening critical infrastructure, improving academic programmes, boosting research and innovation, and driving broad-based reforms across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. He added that improving the quality and impact of research in beneficiary institutions remains a major focus.
The TETFund boss also announced the introduction of a new intervention line—the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN)—under the 2026 annual direct intervention. He said the initiative would enhance access to global academic resources and integrate the Tertiary Education, Research, Applications and Services (TERAS) platform into NgREN from 2026.
Echono said the Fund would continue investing in research and development facilities, laboratories, ICT infrastructure, security projects, and the completion of abandoned projects. He added that future allocations would be strictly tied to performance, enrolment and proper utilisation of funds, warning that institutions with unutilised allocations would not receive further funding until existing resources are fully deployed.
