Tinubu, PGF Governors Meet NLC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Date:

Political signals ahead of the 2027 general elections have intensified as President Bola Tinubu and governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) meet with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The summit, hosted by the PGF at the State House Banquet Hall, began at 11:00 a.m., with Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour.

The invitation to NLC leaders is widely interpreted as an effort to deepen dialogue between the Federal Government, state governors, and organised labour amid economic pressures and political recalibration. Labour leaders are expected to present their charter of demands, which includes:

  • Wage increases and protection of jobs and livelihoods.

  • Creation of a Just Transition Fund to support workers affected by economic and climate transitions.

  • Massive green job creation and reskilling programmes.

  • Strengthened social protection, expanded pensions, healthcare access, and unemployment safety nets.

  • Institutionalised tripartite dialogue giving labour a decisive voice in policy and economic reforms.

Labour sources stress that the summit is pivotal, given recent tensions over wages, inflation, and economic reforms. The engagement is seen as a potential reset in labour-government relations, signalling a preference for negotiation over street protests. Observers note that the outcome may influence political alignments and public opinion ahead of 2027.

With millions of members across strategic sectors, the NLC remains a powerful mobilisation bloc whose stance could affect both economic policy and electoral dynamics.
