ADC Convention Plans Hit Snag as Abuja Venue Withdraws Approval

Date:

The planned national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suffered a setback after the management of Rainbow Event Centre withdrew permission for the party to use its facility in Abuja, citing alleged pressure from authorities.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed the development Monday night, saying the venue owner claimed pressure from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, prompted the decision.

According to Abdullahi, the party had already paid the required fees and concluded arrangements ahead of the convention before the withdrawal notice was issued. He said the venue owner warned that allowing the event to proceed could lead to revocation of the facility’s operating licence.

Despite the development, Abdullahi insisted the party would proceed with its convention as planned, describing the situation as undue interference in the party’s activities.

Earlier on Monday, the ADC announced that it secured the Rainbow Event Centre after authorities reportedly declined its request to use Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome as alternative venues.

However, Wike denied claims that the party applied to use Eagle Square, stating that no such request was received. He also clarified that the stadium facility is under the control of the National Sports Commission rather than the FCT Administration.

The development comes amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the party following a decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of the faction led by David Mark based on a ruling by the Court of Appeal.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Nigeria is expected to hear an appeal filed by Mark seeking to halt the execution of the appellate court judgment as the party pushes ahead with preparations for its convention.
