President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for their efforts in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, despite their defeat to DR Congo in a playoff on Sunday.
The match, held at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1–1 after regulation and extra time, sending the contest to penalties. DR Congo ultimately won 4–3, ending Nigeria’s World Cup hopes for the second consecutive tournament.
Nigeria took an early lead in the third minute through Frank Onyeka, but DR Congo equalised in the 32nd minute via M. Elia. Both teams created scoring opportunities in extra time, including a missed header by Tolu Arokodare and a crucial save by Nigerian goalkeeper Nwabali, but neither side could break the deadlock.
During the penalty shootout, Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed early attempts, while Nwabali saved DR Congo’s first kick. DR Congo converted their remaining penalties to secure victory.
The win puts DR Congo in position to compete for a final ticket to the expanded 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In a statement released Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu praised the team’s performance despite the disappointment. “Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” he said.
The President urged football stakeholders to critically assess the team’s performance. “We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board,” he added.
Tinubu stressed the importance of refocusing on the upcoming African Cup of Nations, scheduled for January to February 2026 in Morocco. “Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” he said, emphasizing lessons from the World Cup qualifiers to guide preparations.
He encouraged fans and Nigerians nationwide to continue supporting the team, highlighting the players’ resilience and dedication in both the match and the high-pressure shootout.
