The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the rescue of all 618 passengers aboard a Kaduna-bound train that derailed along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor on Tuesday.
NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, said in a statement on Wednesday that the derailment occurred at Kilometre 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations. A tactical team of officers was immediately deployed to the site as part of the corps’ disaster response and asset protection mandate.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Audi, who led the operation, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and ensuring passenger safety. He conducted an on-site assessment alongside stakeholders from the transport and security sectors and stressed the need for stronger preventive measures along the corridor to avert future incidents.
“While deploying a tactical team of gallant officers to the accident scene, the NSCDC remains fully committed to protecting critical national assets, civilian safety during emergencies, and disaster management,” Audi said.
He also praised the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) for its swift response, commending its Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, for leadership in managing the aftermath of the incident.
Babawale added that the corps will take decisive action against anyone found sabotaging railway infrastructure, noting that collaboration across agencies remains vital in safeguarding national transport systems.
