UNILORIN Hosts 2025 IUPAC Women’s Breakfast Meeting

Members of the Network of Nigerian Women in STEM gathered at the University of Ilorin for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women’s Breakfast Meeting.

ROYAL NEWS gathered that the event was aimed at highlighting the achievements of women in Chemistry and fostering collaboration and networking among female scientists across Nigeria.

In his opening remarks, the National President of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Prof. Rufus Sha’ato emphasized the importance of women’s participation in science and technology fields, particularly Chemistry.

Represented by the Chairman of the CSN Kwara Chapter, Prof. O.S. Oguntoye, the CSN boss acknowledged the historical underrepresentation of women in these areas and called for concerted effort to create more inclusive environments that encourage young girls to pursue careers in STEM.

In her opening remarks, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, University of Ilorin Prof. Modinah A.O. AbdulRaheem, who spoke through her colleague, Prof. Haleemah I. Adegoke, relterated the significance of the gathering as a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences among women chemists.

In his remarks, the Dean of Physical Sciences, Prof. Baba Alafara, reminded participants of the vital role women play in advancing Chemistry and STEM fields both globally and locally within Nigeria.

He said, “By fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and building networks among female scientists, events like these are crucial for inspiring future generations of women leaders in science.”

Several papers were delivered by prominent Guest Speakers, including the Production Manager at United Foam Limited in Ilorin, Mr. N.S. Ekpenyong: Dr. O. Atolani of the Department of Chemistry, University of Ilorin, and Dr. Victoria T. Olayemi of Kwara State University (KWASU).

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Head of the Industrial Chemistry Department, Prof. F.O. Nwosu, and Former Dean, Prof. U.B. Eke.
Participants were drawn from Kwara State University (KWASU) Federal Polytechnic Offa, Nigeria Army College of Education, Sobi, Barracks, Ilorin Kwara State Teachers , Technologists Postgraduates and Female Secondary School students.

The Zonal Coordinator ( GWB), Prof. Amudat Lawal therefore expressed gratitude to all the participants for making the event a reality and huge success.
