He stated this while speaking at the relaunch of the National Association of Women in Academics (NAWACS), University of Ilorin Chapter.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, the VC explained the importance of diversity in the academia, noting that the University is greatly enriched by the varied thoughts, experiences, and perspectives that women bring to the academic community.
Egbewole also announced the impending introduction of a new gender policy at the University, which he assured his audience, would be of immense benefit to both men and women.
He said: “Very soon, the policy on gender will be unveiled by the University, and I am sure it will be of immense benefit to all of us, men and women alike.”
He further affirmed the University’s full support for its chapter of NAWACS, as he noted the institution’s desire to stand with the Association in its efforts towards engendering gender equity and professional development saying, “We want to be with you in your movement and your roles in gender equity and professional development so that our University will continue to lead in all areas of academia.”
Reflecting on the history of the Association, which was first launched in 2004, the Vice Chancellor commended the decision to reinvigorate the union, and urged the members to make it more vibrant and unified this time around.
Egbewole also highlighted the progress that women have made in the academic world, particularly in leadership roles, noting the significant increase in the number of female professors at the University.
According to him, “It is in the old days that we say mentorship is hard for women because men were at the top. Now that we are here, I wonder who is now at the top. The number of women professors has surged, and even if they want to mentor the men, they have the capacity to do so”.
While anticipating more contributions from the Association in research, innovation, technology, and the broader academic sphere, the Vice Chancellor envisioned a future where every woman in the institution can achieve greatness.
