The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has prohibited all social activities on its campuses beyond 6 p.m. in response to a recent violent incident.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu. The directive, the management said, was necessary following the killing of a businessman during a student event on September 12.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the victim, identified as Chiebonam Nweze, also known as Power-Autos, was stabbed to death while attending a bonfire organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

The university stated that the event was hijacked by miscreants from a neighboring community, who disrupted the gathering and triggered the violence.

Effective immediately, UNN said all social events must be conducted strictly during the day and under the supervision of the institution’s security unit.

“No social events of any kind will be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m. henceforth,” the statement read.

The university management described the incident as unfortunate and stressed that the new measure aims to safeguard lives and maintain order.

It also assured students, staff, and visitors that UNN remains committed to providing a secure environment and will continue to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
