The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State has said it remains resolute and united despite recent defections of some members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party’s position was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Gusau by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Halliru Andi.
The statement followed the defection of Hon. Maharazu Faru, who represents Maradun II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, alongside PDP executives from five wards and several supporters.
Faru, in announcing his defection to the APC, accused Governor Dauda Lawal of failing to deliver on campaign promises, particularly in tackling insecurity — the major concern of Zamfara residents.
“Dauda failed to address challenges ranging from insecurity, which is the main reason people voted for him,” Faru stated.
In its response, the PDP said it was not disturbed by the lawmaker’s decision, describing it as a matter of personal interest.
“While we respect his personal choice, we are not surprised. History has shown that those who place personal ambition above the collective good often find themselves on the wrong side of history,” the party said.
The PDP reiterated that under the leadership of Dr. Jamil Jibo Magayaki, the party remains committed to the rescue and rebuilding of Zamfara State.
“Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has been restoring hope, strengthening institutions, and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of Zamfara people. The ongoing reforms and development initiatives are proof that the PDP is the party of progress and compassion,” Andi added.
He expressed confidence that the defection would not weaken the PDP, insisting that the people of Zamfara still trust and support the party.
“We are confident that Hon. Faru will soon regret his decision. Zamfara people have resolved to stand firmly with the PDP. Come the next elections, our party will win overwhelmingly at all levels because it remains the true party of the masses,” the statement read.
The party also urged its members and supporters to remain steadfast and united, stressing that no defection could “shake its foundation or stop the will of the people.”
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the PDP currently maintains a majority in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, holding 14 seats, while the APC now has 10 lawmakers following the latest defection.
