10yr-old Rofiat wins quiz competition in Lagos

The quiz was the seventh edition, organised by the Total Child Educational Foundation for schools in the LCDA.

Gafar, who is a pupil of the Central Primary School, Orile Iganmu, Lagos, defeated 23 other participants with 70 point in two stages.

The competition covers English Language, Mathematics, General Science, Essay Writing, Spelling and Impromptu Speech.

She won N50, 000.00 cash and textbooks, while her school also received valuable books for its library.

Speaking at the event, Gafar said that she was extremely happy for winning the competition because she studied day and night for the competition.

“I thanked my class teacher for teaching me well in class and the Lagos State Government for giving me free education. I am very happy to win the competition; my parents will be very proud of me,’’ she said.

Other winners are Precious Emekwo of Enitan Primary School, Aguda, who came second with 54 points and won a cash prize of N30,000.00 and textbooks.

Abel Richard of Canal Nursery and Primary School, Coker, got N20,000.00 and textbooks for placing third with 49 points.

Dr. Bankole Sadipe, the Coordinator of the foundation, said that the competition was organised to motivate the pupils and bring out the best in them.

Sadipe said the competition also aimed at building self confidence in the participants for future challenges.

He said the shortcomings and weakness of the pupils in some subjects were observed and the teachers would have opportunity to work on them.

“This is the seventh edition and we are impressed with the performance of the pupils every year. Since we started the competition in 2010, we have observed that the performance of the children in public schools within the LCDA has improved.

“We have also helped three of our past winners to get scholarship for studies up to university level and they are doing well. We will continue to support government and humanity in our own little way. Education is the best legacy every parents, society and government must give a child,’’ Sadipe said.

Mr Tope Yusuf, the Sole Administrator of the LCDA, commended the NGO for contributing to the educational development of pupils in the area.

Yusuf said the competition was a laudable one and that the council would collaborate with the organisers to extend the competition to other areas. We need this type of competition to motivate children to be the best in whatever they want to be in future.

“The participants performed brilliantly in some subjects and not too good in others.

“We will use the experience here to address the shortcomings, this is not about playing or fun fare; children must create time to study at home and parents must support them.

“Children must be very serious in order to go places in their academic activities; they must watch less television and study more. I will support the competition to continue because I am impressed with the performance of the pupils today,’’ Yusuf said.

Mrs. Roselynn Anyanwu, a teacher at the Central Nursery and Primary School, Orile Iganmu thanked the organisers for developing the children academically.

“I feel very happy that my school emerge winner today; we prepared the two candidates academically for the competition. This competition helps students improve in their academics,’’ she said.
